How to Troubleshoot Weak Signal on Virgin Hub 3, 4 & 5
A lot of people with Hub 3, Hub 4, or even the new Hub 5 face the weak signal issue sometimes. And majorly it’s because of the signal strength or wrong placement. Also, if you’ve connected too many gadgets on the same device, the internet speed tends to get affected. A Virgin Media Hub is actually strong router, but still, they tend to struggle when there’s interference from microwaves, Bluetooth, or other WiFi networks nearby.
So, in this guide, we’ll share some easy ways that will help you in fixing the weak signal on your Virgin Hub 3, 4, and 5. You don’t need to be a tech person or anything. Just a few simple checks, moving the router a bit, changing some settings, and you can make the WiFi signal stronger again.
First of All: Begin with the Basics
Weak Wi-Fi doesn’t always mean something is damaged in your device. Sometimes the fix is among the basic one. So yes, you can start with these:
Check with your internet service provider, if the internet is down from their end.
Make sure the power is turned on.
Now, restart the Virgin Media hub.
Give the device around 40 seconds to
reboot. After that, if your phone or laptop reconnects and speeds are
back. Great, it means you’ve solved the issue.
If not, read

Where do you place your Hub?
Placement matters a lot. Like, majority of people ignore this and place the router somewhere behind cabinet or in the drawer. With an intention to hide the device, they prefer placing it secretly.
Therefore, these are some common mistakes people make and you can avoid placing your device in these places:
Inside a TV cabinet
Behind the TV
In a corner by the floor
Near metal or mirrors
Hub requires proper space to work properly. Therefore, place it at eye level, in some open area.
And also, remember walls do matter. Especially thick ones. So place far from them as well, so that your network is not facing any hinderances.
Check the Wi-Fi network names
Hub 3 separates 2.4GHz and 5GHz into different networks. Whereas hub 4 and hub 5 normally combine them, but sometimes devices get confused.
Follow these steps to log in the device:
Log in to the hub settings. You can do this by entering the IP address: “192.168.0.1” in any browser you find suitable.
Make sure Smart Wi-Fi is ON
It will allow the devices to switch bands automatically.
If your older devices keep losing connection. You can temporarily split 2.4GHz and 5GHz again and see which works better. You can switch back to 2.4GHz if it reaches the back bedroom.
Quick test using the My Virgin Media app
Download the “my virgin mediaapp”. It works great in checking signal strength around your house.
All you have to do is, walk around with your phone connected to the app and scan rooms:
If you see:
Green, it indicates strong connection
Yellow, means an average connection
Red, shows no connection. Try moving the device to some other power socket.
This way, you can exactly reach the root cause of the problem.
Firmware updates
Virgin Media updates happen automatically. But sometimes your hub gets stuck on old software.
Don’t worry you don’t need any professional help. Just:
Reboot the Hub
Leave it on overnight
Check the app for update status
If you see a firmware software running since quite old time, update the device to make it work properly.
Try turning off and on the 5GHz band
Hub 3 can sometimes hold onto its 5GHz band even when it shouldn’t. Quick thing to experiment:
Turn OFF 5GHz in Wi-Fi settings
Let devices reconnect to 2.4GHz
Test speed around the house
If it fixes the issue, you know band steering was the issue to be resolved. Turn 5GHz back on later once placement is fixed.
Connecting via Wired Connection
Grab one laptop. Plug it directly into the hub with a cable. And if it begins to work fine. It means the problem was WiFi placement or some interference. But if internet is still slow, it means it got some other network issue.
This test tells you instantly if the problem is with hub or there is some other issue.
Range extenders aren’t always magic
A lot of people buy the cheapest plug-in extender from a random online seller. Then wonder why Wi-Fi still sucks.
Extenders should be:
From Virgin or a known brand
Midway between hub and dead zone
Never hidden behind furniture
Hub 4 and Hub 5 work best with Wi-Fi
Pods from Virgin Media.
Channel width
Sometimes set
5GHz to 40MHz instead of 80MHz. It tends to drop out the speed but
creates stable connection.
Stability > pretty speed tests.
Unauthorized users might have access to your network
Are you residing in an apartment
building? Everyone stacked using the same channels?
This creates
signal chaos.
Resolve this with the given solutions:
Check Wi-Fi analyzer apps.
Move to less crowded channels.
Small tweaks tend to create huge changes.
When nothing works, Reset the
Device.
You can perform the reset by following the steps
given:
Locate the tiny button present in the small hole labelled as reset. Press it with a pin for around 10 seconds.
And after this, the hub will go back to
its factory settings. And now you can login using default settings.
(Look for default credentials on the label of the device). This wipes
your custom settings.
But sometimes, it is the best option as it
tends to clear all the glitches, bugs, wrong settings made by
mistake.
Final thoughts
Your Virgin Media Hub isn’t useless. It just needs a little change in its settings or its placement. WiFi signals are similar to some tangible object and tend to get affected by walls, neighbors, gadgets, random interference, everything fights it. But with the right tweaks, your hub can work way better than it does today.
You didn’t pay for weak signal. You paid for streaming without buffering, you paid for video calls that don’t freeze, and you paid for freedom from Ethernet cables running across the living room.
We deal with home networks all the time. Trust the process. Try the easy wins first. And if you'd like, we can help you with exact settings based on your setup — just tell us your hub model and where it is placed right now.
